Jubiläen und runde Geburtstage sind dazu da, um sich zu erinnern. Sie sind willkommene Anlässe, zurück zu blicken und Festreden zu halten. Man erinnert sich guter Zeiten und großer Tage und stellt manchmal dabei fest, dass der Jubilar doch allgegenwärtig ist und dieser Festreden gar nicht bedarf. Er hat uns soviel gegeben, dass jede Hommage an ihn doch nur ein bescheidener Dank und eine Formsache sein kann. Und wenn es Künstler betrifft, ist es auf jeden Fall so! Ihre Werke, seien es Bücher, Gemälde, Skulpturen oder eben die Musik, sind wie selbstverständlich um uns, zeigen das Leben in allen Facetten, machen es schöner, angenehmer, manchmal auch leichter, machen uns manchmal nachdenklicher.
Einer, der dieses „Handwerk" so meisterlich wie nur wenige beherrscht, ist der italienische „Cantautore", Komponist und Interpret, Sanremo-Star und Grand-Prix-Sieger 1990 „L'Italiano" Toto Cutugno.
1990 - der „eiserne Vorhang" war gefallen. „Insieme, unite, unite Europe ..." wer erinnert sich nicht an diesen Song des Jahres, der längst zur "Europahymne" geworden ist und für ein Europa ohne Grenzen eintrat. Dabei beschleicht sicher nicht nur Grand-Prix-Freunde eine leichte Wehmut, denn jetzt, wo die Vision des Salvatore (Toto) Cutugno Wirklichkeit geworden und die „Grand-Prix-Familie" gewachsen ist, ist Italien seit sieben Jahren nicht zum Song Contest zurückgekehrt.
Toto Cutugno nicht „eurovisionsweit" kennengelernt zu haben, wäre ein Verlust für viele Anhänger der europäischen. Musikszene gewesen. Wer ihn heute auf der Bühne erlebt, wird meinen, die Zeit sei fast unmerklich an ihm vorübergegangen. Keine Spur davon, dass er in diesem Jahr 60 Jahre alt wird. Seine Lieder, zeitlos wie er selbst, präsentiert er mit Schwung und Leidenschaft zusammen mit seiner großen Band in den Konzertsälen der Welt - von Atlantic City bis Kasachstan, von Mailand über Moskau bis Tokio und noch ein bisschen weiter.
Das musikalische Talent wurde am 7. Juli 1943, einen Tag vor Landung der Amerikaner in Italien, dem kleinen Salvatore in Fosdinovo (Massa Carrara) in die Wiege gelegt. Toto (die Kurzform von Salvatore), zog wenige Monate später als Baby mit seiner Familie nach La Spezia, wo sein Vater als Marineoffizier im größten Hafen der italienischen Marine arbeitete. Totos Vater, selbst ein exzellenter Musiker, leitete in seiner Freizeit ein Blasorchester. Er war es, der den jungen Toto ermutigte, sein musikalisches Talent zu entwickeln, denn sein Sohn zeigte bereits als Kind großes musikalisches Interesse. Im zarten Alter von 13 Jahren belegte er bei einem Akkordeon-Wettbewerb bereits den 3. Platz. Er begann Schlagzeug zu spielen und gab bald sein Können an andere weiter. Dies war der Beginn einer sehr erfolgreichen Karriere.
„Mr. Goldfinger" der Schallplatte, so sein Spitzname als Komponist in Italiens Musikbranche, war mit 17 Jahren ständiger Drummer der Band seines Vaters. Er spielte Gitarre, Klavier und Saxophon und machte schon mit 19 Jahren eine mehrmonatige Tournee mit „Maestro Manusardi" durch Skandinavien. Zurück in Italien, gründete er seine eigene Gruppe „Toto e i Tati" und trat mit Eigenkompositionen in ganz Italien auf.
Das blieb anderen bekannten Künstlern Italiens, wie etwa Grand-Prix-Siegerin Gigliola Cinquetti oder Domenico Mo
dugno und vor allem Adriano Celentano nicht verborgen. Aber nicht nur die namhaften Interpreten seines Heimatlandes vertrauten auf die künstlerische Kreativität des jungen Toto Cutugno, sondern ebenso Frankreichs Größen wie die unvergessene Dalida, Johnny Hallyday, Mireille Mathieu oder Michel Sardou, um nur einige von ihnen zu nennen, waren mit Cutugno als Komponist und Texter auf der sicheren Seite. Dieser junge Künstler schrieb Songs mit kontinuierlicher Hitgarantie für Stars wie Adriano Celentano oder Joe Dassin, wie zum Beispiel „L'ete indienne", das mehrfachen Goldstatus erreichte.Unzählige Gold- und Platin-Schallplatten wurden ihm für seine Auftragsarbeiten als Komponist, Texter, Arrangeur und Produzent bereits verliehen, als er sich entschloss, mit seiner neuen Gruppe „Albatros" 1976 am Sanremo-Festival teilzunehmen. Er erreichte auf Anhieb den dritten Platz mit dem Song „Volo AZ 504".
1978 setzte er als Solointerpret mit „Donna, donna mia" einen entscheidenden weiteren Meilenstein in seiner Karriere und eroberte die Spitze der italienischen Charts. Ein Jahr später erschien seine erste LP „Voglio l'anima". Aber ''sein Jahr" 1980 stand ihm erst noch bevor: Mit „Solo noi" gewann er Sanremo. Und der Sieger des „Tokio Festivals -Yamaha Songs International" hieß mit „Francesca non sa" und „Olympic Games" (gesungen von Miguel Bose) - Toto Cutugno aus „Bella Italia"!
Seitdem ist nahezu jeder seiner Songs, ob von ihm oder von anderen Künstlern interpretiert, ein Hit geworden. Er gehört zu den erfolgreichsten Teilnehmern des Sanremo-Festivals. Sein weltweit bekanntestes Lied „L'Itaiiano" aus dem Jahr 1983 wurde rasch zur „zweiten italienischen Nationalhymne" erklärt und als eines der erfolgreichsten und global bestverkauften italienischen Lieder mit Gold ausgezeichnet.
Der Italiener erreichte mit seiner Musik international einen hohen Beliebtheitsgrad, selbst in so weit entfernten Ländern wie Israel und Korea. Er veröffentlichte bislang 14 Alben, darunter eine französische und spanische LP, siegte einmal in Sanremo und wurde dort fünfmal Zweiter, von seinen Spitzenplätzen als Komponist einmal ganz abgesehen, und machte unter anderem gemeinsame Aufnahmen mit internationalen Stars wie Ray Charles („Gli Amori") und katapultierte sich damit in die Top Ten.
Jedes Kind in Italien kennt ihn als beliebten Fernsehmoderator mit einer humorvollen und herzerfrischenden Art aus quotenträchtigen Shows wie „Domenica in", „Piacere Raiuno" oder „I fatti vostri". Seine Kompositionen wie „Flash" oder „C'e la RAI" wurden zu Soundtracks im italienischen Fernsehen. Ebenso schrieb er die Musik zu einem Adriano-Celentano-Film. Sein internationales Format bewies er mit „Because I Love You", „Aeroporto Kennedy" und krönte es mit „Insieme 1992" beim Eurovision Song Contest 1990 in Zagreb. Bei seinem Potential fiel es ihm nicht schwer, diesen Sieg zu „planen" und auch einzufahren. Als Vorjahressieger durfte er, zusammen mit Gigliola Cinquetti, 1991 den 36. Grand Prix aus den Studios der berühmten Filmstadt Cinecitta in Rom präsentieren. 1997 gelang ihm mit „Faccia pulita" in Sanremo einmal mehr ein berührender Song.
In letzter Zeit ist Toto Cutugno wieder verstärkt weltweit on tour und stellt dabei unter anderem seine neueste CD „II treno va..." („Der Zug fährt...") vor. Inspiriert wurde er dabei vom großen Frederico Fellini. Dieses Album (in Frankreich sofort nach Erscheinen ein Riesenerfolg) hat die typische italienische Gefühlstiefe und enthält berührende Balladen wie „Clandestino" und „Niannao" oder Liebeslieder wie „Se una donna se ne va", wie sie nur das Leben oder Toto Cutugno schreiben kann.
Das Lied „Sciuri, sciuri" (der sizilianische Ausdruck für „Blumen") ist eine Hommage an die Heimat seines Vaters. Der Mann mit der rauchigen Stimme, den tiefdunklen Augen und dem noch schwärzeren Haar, dessen elegante Bühnenpräsenz sechzig Jahre fast nichts anhaben konnten, trägt dieses Lied so emotional im zungenbrecherischen sizilianischen Dialekt vor, dass man unwillkürlich nur noch die Koffer packen und den nächsten Flieger nach Italien nehmen möchte.
Toto Cutugno, der Poet am Klavier und Mister „L'Itaiiano" mit der Gitarre, ist als Mann mit „Emozioni" immer ein Garant für ein unvergessliches musikalisches Erlebnis, weil seine Lieder so zeitlos schön, poetisch und stark sind. Er ist längst im Olymp seiner musikalischen Karriere angelangt, aber selbst ein Toto Cutugno hat noch Träume, etwa die Musik für einen großen, romantischen Film zu schreiben oder eine musikalische Komödie zu schaffen. Sein neuestes Werk „II treno va..." wird nicht das letzte bleiben, und wer seine Braunschweiger Gala vor nicht allzu langer Zeit erleben durfte, kann sich dessen fast sicher sein.
Einen Ausblick darauf boten bereits sein glänzender Gastauftritt im Frühjahr bei San Remo 2004 als einer der „Big-Stars", sowie Toto Cutugnos Moderationen der „San Remo Galas" der Raiuno im Juli 2004 , sowie seine erneute Teilnahme am San Remo Festival 2005 als einer der ganz großen Protagonisten dieses Contests i n der Categorie „Classici" im Duett der bezaubernden Annalisa Minnetti – „Come noi nessuno al mondo" – ein romantisch-poppiger Song ganz in der Cutugno-Tradition- belegte den zweiten Platz in der Gesamtwertung und den ersten Platz in seiner Kategorie.
Er belohnte seine Fans für ihre jahrzenhntelange Treue mit den folgenden CD´s „Cantando-eine Wiederauflage seiner internationalen Hits,sowie mit „Come noi nessuno al mondo"-ein Must-Have für alle Liebhaber des Italo-Pops, dessen Meister er unstreitig als Cantautore ist!
In absehbarer Zeit sind eine spanische CD-Version und eine DVD zu erwarten!

Salvatore Cutugno, artistically known as Toto Cutugno, was born the 7th of July 1943 in Fosdinovo province of Massa (ITALY), a few months later, his family moves to "La Spezia", where his father has to complete the military service as a marine.
Since he was a kid Toto he showed a big interest in music and his father, an excellent trumpet player, encourages him and Toto starts with the drums as a self taught Student. His skills allow him, only being a child, to join a local music band. Meanwhile, he learns to play the accordion and at age of 13 takes part in a regional contest where he gets the 3rd place.
He goes on playing the drums in local bands until he reaches the age of 19, and afterwards, he realizes (his country life is full of limitations, so he decides to join a band leades by maestro Manusardi who proposes him to do a tour around Finland for 6 months. When Toto goes back to Italy, he forms a band called "Toto e i Tati". This way he Starts to play in different bars and pubs of the peninsula, with a repertoire of hits and songs composed by himself.
In 1975, Toto, who has been writing and composing songs for some years, becomes a famous composer in France, where a song called "Africa" is edited by Joe Dassin under the title of "L'ete Indien" which very soon becomes an international great hit. In 1976 his fame as an autor is confirmed with another recording of his songs featured by Joe Dassin, "Et si tu n'existes pas". From that moment on, he gets lots of offers. He Starts writing songs for Mirielle Mathieu, Dalida, Jhonny Halliday, Michel Sardou, Claude Francoise, Herve Vilard and Sheila in France and in Italy for Domenico Modugno, Gigiola Cinquetti, Ornella Vanoni...
His songs apart from being performed by these Singers, are also played by big orchestras such as F. Poucek, Caravelli, and Mauritat. Also in 1976 Toto, for the first time, takes part in the Festivalbar with the song "Nel cuore nei sensi" and this time he gets a very good place. The same song is performed in France by Gerard Lenorman. This one also gets to the top ten.
In 1977, the Albatros take part again in San Remo Festival with a song composed by Toto "Gran Premio" (Big Price)
In 1978 Toto's artistic life changes completely and very positively. He abandons the band Albatros and records the song "Donna Donna Mia" as a songwriter, used in the program of wide audience "Scommentiamo" presented by Mike Bongiorno, reaching the top of Hit Parade.
During the same period he writes the first song for Adriano Celentano, "Soli", which stays in the top ten of sales for months. In 1979 Toto edits his first L.P. entitied "Voglio l'anima". The song in this L.P. are not only performed by Italian Singers but also from abroad.
In 1980 Toto archieves a great success, first place in the Festival of Sanremo with "Solo noi", first place in Festival "Yamaha Songs Internacional" with the song "Olympic Games" performed by Miguel Bose and fourth place as a songwriter with "Innamorati" in Festivalbar.
The same year he is the author of the L.P. "II tempo se ne va" for Adriano Celentano, album that gets a big success. Later on he creates "Flash", the sound track of the TV program presented by Mike Bongiorno.
In 1981 appears his second L.P. entitled "La mia musica". This is also performed by great international artists. In 1983, Toto goes back to the festival of Sanremo with "L'italiano", where he gets all the votes for the first place. This event is linked with the contest Totip. This song will be performed and translated by various artists in differents languages, selling millions of records and making famous Toto in unthinkable countries such as Israel and Korea.
In 1984 Toto is back in Sanremo with "Serenata", achieving the second place in the general classification.
In 1985 he takes part in the Festival of Sanremo, but only as a composer, with two of his songs. One of them is performed by Jose Luis Rodriguez (know as "El Puma" with the song "C'est Venice". The other one by the well known Mexican singer Luis Miguel, discovered by Toto in Italy, who at the age of 15 got the second place with the song "Noi ragazzi di oggi". In 1985 Toto published the single "Mi piaccerebbe andare al mare il Lunedi" (l'd like to go to the see in Monday).
In 1986 he receives a prize for the song "L'italiano". In the last five years this record was the top sales all over the world. He goes to the Festival of Sanremo with "Azzurra malincolia"
En 1990 Toto obtains a second place in the festival of Sanremo with "Gli amori" which that time is performed by the great Ray Charles who shows us a unique performance. That really atouches Toto and this feeling is transmitted to the audience of Ariston theatre.
In 1990 obtains another great success, winning in Zagreb in the Eurovision Contest with "Insieme 1992". In 1991 together with Gigi Sabani presents the TV program "Piacere Raiuno" and also presents the 36th edition of the Eurovision contest which takes place in the Studios of Cinecitta in Rome, with Gigliola Cinquetti, the only winners of this important Italian event.
Also, in 1991, he presents with Rafaella Carra and Fabrizio Frizzi the TV program of Rai 1 "Vela d'Oro". In 1992 is published the L.P. "Non e facile essere uomini" and in summer he presents the program RAI 1 "Stasera mi Butto" and in Autum presents with Alba Parietti "Domenica In".
Meanwhile, he writes the song "Se mi ami"(lf you love me) which is presented in the Festival of Sanremo by Claudia Mori. In 1995 Toto goes back to the Festival of Sanremo with "Voglio andare a viere in Campagna" with a big radio success at that moment. That is also the name of the album which appears at the same time. In 1990 Toto presents a program called "Sei Forte" for Tele Montecarlo. He is always gets the support of his good friend Franco Nisi, the director of Radio Italia solo musica.
In 1997 he is again in Sanremo with "Faccia Pulita", song that is includes in the Album "Canzoni Nacoste".
In 1999 he continues with the musical managing of the program "l Fatti Vostri", Rai 2. In the year 2000, new Album, TV concerts...
